Landscape Photography Tips for Beginners

The following is the first post of many tips and tricks for landscape and wildlife photography.  Looking for a way to improve your photography? This blog will give stories, tips for landscape photography composition, landscape photography ideas, tips for beginners, and serve as a tutorial for those willing to give it a read!

 

Landscape Photography Duluth, MN

The first post is from the beautiful land up north in the lovely city of Duluth Minnesota!  It was an anniversary trip celebrating our first year of marriage and I had heard we needed to see a Duluth sunrise.
 

TIP 1- Research

The image above was taken in Duluth MN at around 5:13 in the morning. Why the exact time? Well to get the watercolor sunrise shown above you have to get up and get out before the sun does! My alarm wakes me from my slumber around 4:30AM. I was up and out the door by 4:45. I had strolled the pier before so I knew this is where I wanted to watch the sun come up! This brings me to my first landscape photography tip- RESEARCH!

Get out before! Know your way around so you are not chasing the light!

As you are out on vacation or just walking around, be on the look out for spots that might be good photos! The day before, my wife and I walked out to the lighthouse and back.  I knew I wanted to use the leading lines of the walls and my subject, the lighthouse.  These terms of leading lines to the subject, have to do with landscape photography composition.  Using composition to fuel your landscape photography ideas while walking around can really put a punch in your photos!   Moreover, I knew the sun was coming up just to the left as I use an app on my phone called Sun Surveyor.  So to sum up- I knew where the sun was going to be and what time, I also knew where I wanted to be to get the shot I was after. 
 

TIP 2- Look for “payoffs”

So back to it! I get out of the car and walk over to the pier, gear in hand, and stumble on a puddle! Oh man I was so excited because a calm morning and a puddle of water in front of my subject meant nice reflections! I begin to set up my camera and tripod and think to myself- “How can I make this image the most interesting it can be?” Before I even get the camera on the tripod I knew I wanted to be low and right against the puddle.  On to more of the landscape photography tutorial-  I knew I wanted a nice long shutter speed and everything in focus so I set the camera to f18 and the iso to 50 (the lowest available).  I then dialed in the shutter speed to get the correct exposure for the image shooting on manual mode.

Tip 3 – Explore the Composition!

Above is what the scene looked like! You can see the puddle in the lower left and the lighthouse near the middle to the left.  I believe it is very important to explore all parts of your landscape photography composition when shooting.  In the age of digital cameras the amount of images we have available to take is incredibly high, why not explore all the different angles and get the most interesting one to you!  

This image was a ton of fun to shoot and as hard as getting up early is! Get out there and plan for a sunrise!
